What is ECU remapping?
Your car's engine control unit (ECU) runs software that decides how the engine behaves: how much fuel is injected, how much boost a turbocharger makes, when the spark fires, and more. Manufacturers calibrate those values to cover many markets, fuel qualities and conditions at once.
A remap adjusts that calibration for your car. A Stage 1 remap is a software-only change for an otherwise standard engine. Turbocharged petrol and diesel engines are the usual candidates. What a remap achieves depends on the engine, its condition and the map itself.
Things to know first
